Music Apreesh, Week One: The incomparable Megan Staley told me to - TopicsExpress

Music Apreesh, Week One: The incomparable Megan Staley told me to go check out Muse, which I did because: A) Megan was the first to pull the trigger on my plea for new music to make me into a cooler person and I like to reward that sort of bravery. B) Megan is a rock karaoke goddess and otherwise all-around gentlewoman and scholar whose opinion is not to be taken likely. C) She suggested Ian turned her onto the band, so theres an even deeper level of cred there, even if Ian hasnt stepped up to play this game yet. D) I dug the poetry of embarking on a year-long listening project with a band named Muse. So already this experiment is interesting to me. I hadnt heard of Muse, at least in any meaningful way. But I totally already knew their music. Like, half a dozen songs are ones that I have absolutely heard. Starlight in particular, without ever knowing the name of the song, is one whose melody I was singing along with on the first listen. Which begs the question, how do I know this? Have I heard it in enough bars in the past five years that it seeped in through my skin even if I wasnt really paying attention? Did I happen by it enough times on some Pandora station without ever looking to see who the artist was even though my reaction to hearing it this week was, hey, I love this song!? Did I just think it was Coldplay?? Who knows. But I will say this was a soft start for me, since not only had I obviously heard and liked some of their music somewhere along the way, but the pop references of Muse are utterly familiar and easy for me to like: Radiohead, Queen, and Depeche Mode all came long for the ride while I was listening. Sneaky bastards even pointed fingers at some classical tunes. Schuberts Ave Maria: I heard you. Plus, I am a snob for lead vocalists who can really sing, and I dug Matthew Bellamys pipes. Even if every breath taken was audible to nearly a *gasp* sound - it lends an element of drama. (I know this vocal snobbery is about to be challenged, and Im up for it.) So this week was fun, and a final thank you to Megan for that. Not sure exactly whats up next, but Im going to try to go a little further out of my comfort zone... Stay tuned.
