Music Major Freshman Friday A talk with Laura Cortright, soprano and fluist Intended degree: Music Education 2013 Graduate of Pulaski High School Why did you pick a Music Education Major? I had some fantastic experiences with the Pulaski High School Band and our director (UWGB Alumni) D. Thomas Busch. Music has always been an integral part of my life. I love the connections that people share in music. It’s neat to think that I’ll be able to help others find those connections too. What kinds of experiences have you had in your first semester at UWGB? It’s been crazy. Wind Ensemble, Vocal Jazz and Choir keep my musical side occupied…but there are plenty of other activities, too. Zumba, cheap movies, clubs, musicals, concerts etc. …College is awesome. What’s your Favorite Music Class? On the “fun” side, Vocal Jazz wins. The atmosphere is relaxed, and it’s awesome working in mini-ensembles. We sing our songs, dance around, goof off, and get work done. Oh! And our first concert (Doo Wop) is next Tuesday Nov. 26. Do you have any advice for students considering Majoring in Music? Majoring in music is hard, so be prepared to work your butt off. Since a lot of our classes are only one credit, you have to put in a LOT of time in order to keep up. Majoring in music is also amazing. You start working on the courses in your major right away your freshman year, and you can make friends really quickly. I know thirty people extremely well because they’re in music classes with me. The sense of camaraderie here is fantastic. Keep the goal in mind, remember that you’re in college to have fun AND learn, and you’ll be fine. I promise.
