Music Monday Hesitation was influenced a lot by Ornette - TopicsExpress

Music Monday Hesitation was influenced a lot by Ornette Coleman’s band. I’ve always loved Don Cherry. In the 50’s, Ed Blackwell played in a group with my father before he joined Ornette’s band. So, I was very aware of Ornette’s music from an early age. Hesitation is a Rhythm Changes with no piano on it. The melody starts in B Flat, but then it modulates to B. It’s obviously very syncopated. Although most of the music I was writing at the time was dealing with the Phrygian sound and bi-tonality, Hesitation has standard changes and a very diatonic melody. The solo section features me and my brother playing with the chromatic approach made popular by Ornette, mixed with the traditions of New Orleans music. At the very end of the song, Branford and I play a melody that we had heard Ornette and Don Cherry play. I’m not sure where it came from, but I love it. Enjoy, Wynton
