Music Monday I wrote this song for a TV show called Shannon’s Deal. I was trying to evoke the image of someone crying. I wrote three songs for this album and my goal was to make each very different. I played using a plunger mute which is fairly uncommon to hear. The song is in C Minor. Measure 4 alludes to the key of D Flat, but then I bring it back into C. In measure 6 the G Flat 7 is just a harmonic device as we are really coming to the IV chord (F7). I use the Major 7th against the dominant chord in measures 5 & 7. And finally, that phrase ends on a Major 7th against the Minor chord. The root motion moving into Letter B is up a 4th like in the blues. The chords in this section are more traditional ii-V-I type progressions. At the end of the phrase, we end up back in C except this time its quality is Major. To begin the next section we stay on a C, but this time it’s dominant. The bridge ultimately does a long turn around to F Minor (Major 7). An important part of the song is the internal melodies that are created by the chords. Enjoy, Wynton
