Music, Script, and Artwork by Isaac McCaslin Video Script: If a tree is beautiful in a forest and there is no one there to cut it down, does anybody care? It might be that the more simulations and replicas can suffice it to appease a populations relationship to beauty, the longer a tree in a forest will sustain itself, never mind beauty. ‘Urban Sprawl’—The fetishization of natural environments leading to low-density population distribution in the peripheries of cities, ultimately resulting in increased environmental degradation. If we are to endure the human condition we must hold affinity with the beautiful and the grotesque, meditating on the origin of these phenomenon—how are they perceived from... or why are they projected on… natural occurrences, the thrall of urban chaos, plastic replicas, simulated environments, and especially society’s refuse. The Good dances with the Bad and Beauty’s Beast wont necessarily turn into a prince. Technological progress, increased life expectancy, the advent of simulations, mass consumption, wastefulness, and ecological degradation. The Hudson River School Painters embodied ‘Manifest Destiny’ glorifying hidden places and perhaps inadvertently influencing the commoditization of natural environments—tourism. My paintings are a reverse fetishization. I mix up relationships of attraction vs. repulsion—natural beauty vs. urban ugliness. The paintings are responsive to a culture of simulations and wastefulness, in pursuit of an emerging sensation born from a new era of waste reclamation.
