Music What are the qualities the air must assume to be initiated into the lungs of John Coltrane, and expelled as a work of art? Or perhaps the music is already there incarnate awaiting someone like Coltrane to realize it. Maybe music resides in the antipodes of the mind where it seeks a medium to reveal itself. I would like to postulate that all three theories could simultaneously exist. In fact I would go as far as saying that these realities weave a fabric in your interior landscape that you experience as music. With this being said one might say that music “plays”. The primary questions are, who does it play, what plays it, and can it experience itself. The secondary questions are why, and is it important to know why. When posed with the question “What is Music”, I believe that the closest clear-cut answer is that music is the play of sound. Why does music happen? What do all of the notes, (and non notes) which come out of Coltrane’s horn mean? What guides the flight of a hummingbird or the contour of a mother’s lullaby? Music specialists stoke an evolutionary quality in the furnace of sound. When Thelonious Monk threw his elbow down on that piano it was like a lightning strike of inspiration. The play of sound is a game in which the musician and the music interact to form a collective receptiveness among everyone who tunes in.
