Music, like Food, is a matter of taste. Some like to eat only what - TopicsExpress

Music, like Food, is a matter of taste. Some like to eat only what they know. Others are open to experimenting from the bounty of the smorgasbord available to them. Inspiration dictated by a script, confines art to a formulaic practice. This is a restriction of artistic freedom, which leaves us all bereft of musical progress. Even ones we greatly respect have found shifts in expression to their distaste. Miles Davis supposedly referred to Ornette Coleman as screwed up in the head. Dizzy Gillespie is reported to have remarked about Ornette Colemans music: I dont know what hes playing, but it aint jazz. So enraged was Max Roach, reputedly, after listening to one of Ornette Colemans shows, he followed him backstage and punched him in the mouth. If theres a shred a truth in any of these tales, it is at the very least indicative of how frustrated some can become when art is delivered differently than how some would prefer to hear it. More important than whether one gets it, or hears it, is the necessity to give artists the room to share what they honestly feel, rather than limit their output to the expected norm. The audience is free to like what it likes, and disregard what fails to move them to pleasure, showing their approval, or lack thereof, by the amount of coins they put in the artists purse. Equally, the artist can decide if the money wheel safety machine dictates their creations, or, the musical spirits. Ornette Coleman - Free - YouTube
