Music of the Day: Curtis Mayfield, Mighty, Mighty (Spade & Whitey) The music of Curtis Mayfield is often referred to as the soundtrack to the civil rights movement. Here, we see Mayfield grappling in the early 1970s with the racial politics in America... having gone through the previous decades of activism, unrest and reaction, he is reflecting on where we go from here, from a new and deeper sense of consciousness. If James Baldwin is my favorite writer on race, Curtis Mayfield is a musical source that I return to again and again, as well.
