Music of the Day: Mel & Tim, Starting All Over Again Another - TopicsExpress

Music of the Day: Mel & Tim, Starting All Over Again Another amazing soul tune from the 1970s. On the surface, the song is about a man and a woman who had a previous relationship that broke down and who are now trying to reconcile. But, in the context of the movement, we can also read the song through the lens of race relations. After all, the problem of race in America is relational, meaning it is about the interactivity of real people... including you and me. So, how do we reconcile with one another in America, across the racial divide, after so much pain and trauma? How do we begin to repair the damage and find the love once more so that we might yet realize the possibility of American democracy and the beloved community? We can never go back and wipe the slate clean. We can only go through to get through, as they say. Anyone who has struggled through a rough patch in a relationship might be able to understand the sentiment here... and, it seemed to me to make great sense to share with you now, as we reflect on our semester together and the difficult history we have been studying... and because it seems to also resonate with our nations current racial woes and the searching that so many are doing. How do we start all over again?
