Musical perfection 5 day challenge. Day 5 – Scott Walker. Yes, it is that nice Scott Walker from The Walker Brothers, who sang ‘Take It Easy On Yourself’ and ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Any More’. It’s fair to say that he’s changed a fair bit since the days when The Walker Brothers’ fanclub had more members than The Beatles’ did, and Scott was hosting his own Friday night prime time BBC TV show and Christmas Special. While most of Scott’s 60’s contemporaries are either retired, dead, or endlessly regurgitating the fruits of their salad days on the stages of innumerable holiday camps and provincial theatres, Scott has been pursuing a very different direction all of his own. He’s been keeping himself occupied by deconstructing every element of what we normally consider to constitute a pop music song, and then re-imagining it to include, amongst other things, sounds such as that of a huge wooden packing case filled with building blocks being dragged across a concrete floor, a donkey braying, or a classically-trained and internationally renowned session percussionist punching a pig’s carcass. And very occasionally (anything less than ten years between albums is considered positively prolific amongst Scotts disciples) he will be sufficiently satisfied with some of those recordings that he will release a collection of them, that sound like aural postcards from the future of a distant planet. My final nominee for this challenge is David Jay.
