Musician Vasant Kanakapur passes away. Senior musician Vasant Kanakapur (76) died of cardiac arrest at his residence here on Thursday. May his soul rest in peace. Pandit Kanakapur, who was a renowned harmonium player, learnt music from R.G. Desai and later under Hanumantrao Walvekar. He was appointed music composer at All India Radio Dharwad in 1975. He played a key role in organising concerts, composing music, writing the notation for background music, training artistes and other such activities at AIR Dharwad till his retirement in 1994. Pandit Kanakapur accompanied eminent vocalists, including the legendary Ustad Amir Khan, Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Parveen Sultana, and Prabha Atre among others, on the harmonium. The Basavaraj Rajguru-Vasant Kanakapur duo is among the celebrated saath-performers of yesteryear. Music composition also led to an intense engagement with Kannada poetry of Bendre, Kuvempu, D.S. Karki, Chennaveera Kanavi and others. He was chosen to preside over the national harmonium convention in Mumbai recently. He was honoured with the Kanaka-Purandara and Rajyotsava awards.
