Musician tip of the day. There is a difference between an engineer - TopicsExpress

Musician tip of the day. There is a difference between an engineer and a producer. The engineer is techniquely advanced and selects microphones, rooms, direct board patches, and follows that which the producer and musicians instruct. If they say reverb he says how much? A producer by the classic deffinition is the one who hears your song, and wonders how it can be made into a high quality recording. A producer may try creating each track separately, having the band play take after take until they get a keeper, recording everything straight and and adding affects later, and dozens of other approaches. A producer can also be an arranger suggesting a tempo or key change, or perhaps suggesting instruments such as added strings, horns, etc. The producer and engineer may work together on the final master, but one of them, usually the producer, will decide the volume and stereo balance Then, the track goes to mastering so that the album has consistency throughout and can be replicated digitally or otherwise. Production teams may have their own following, so you may get radio and critic interest by using a high profile crew. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Often.
