Musicians, its always good to remain PROFESSIONAL when playing for any church that you are hired by. One thing that has been my rule for over 30 years.. I DONT FRATINIZE. I do not. I truly dont believe in it. Yes, I said hi and bye.. but anything else is extremely few and far between. I have never been one to gossip, I dont hang out with anyone, I dont sit up in anyones house nor does anyone sit in mine. I have tipped a few folks on this principle and it went in one ear and out the other. Folks are not always coming to you for the good. Some folks are fishing for anything they can take and run with. They use things against you.. make up things.. etc. It is SO much easier to keep it moving and it works for me. When you keep it moving you wont find your name up in a bunch of foolishness. I am so grateful for a church that I played for a number of years ago. I attended a funeral there not long ago.. just a participant. No big deal. I noticed that the church was extremely full. Uh, whomever is supposed to be playing for this service needs to start heading up to that organ. That church was packed and they were ready to church it up. Okay the funeral starts at 11:00 and its now 10:55.. Whereforout thou is the musician? At 10:57 someone came over to me and said Sis, the choir is singing yadda yadda yadda.. and then the minister is going to....... Uh, I am NOT the musician. Anyway.. it was time for service to start and I had to get on post. I am on the organ watching the door for the musician. Funeral started, family came in, choir sang.. STILL no musician. Soloist came up did her LONG solo... minister then got up.. preached.. I backed him up.. last viewing.. family on the way out. IN comes the Musician. What in the world? Who does that? Anyway this same church reached out to me concerning an upcoming service. It gave me pleasure to hear that: Sis. Ruffin, you dont even have to come in and talk to anybody.. the church likes you. You are really churchy, friendly and professional. I guess 2 out of 3 aint bad! you know I aint friendly! ha ha ha! But to God be the glory for them seeing something in me and for me standing firm.
