Musings 26: Invading the Sacred - Misquoting/ Selective reading of scriptures to establish agendas Recently, in a paper presentation which I attended, the researcher (who is also a reputed professor) declared that the Indian epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata celebrate rape. And what are his evidences? Sita harana (Abduction of Sita by Ravana) and Draupadi vastrakshepa (Disrobing of Draupadi by Kauravas)! While it is one thing to say that a book mentions something, it is totally different to claim that it celebrates it. Any individual who has read Ramayana and Mahabharata with the minimum integrity of a reader (forget that of a researcher) would clearly see the position of the epics (which formed the opinion of Indian public) on the same. In fact, the instances that are referred to are central in establishing the villainy of Ravana and Kauravas. The researcher therefore was making a BLATANT LIE. However, his claim went unchallenged for he integrated it well with his narrative. This is not a stray incident. There is a well laid out larger to design to this. The problem here is that we Indians dont have (have lost) swa-paksha (own stand on our scriptures) so that many of us easily fall prey to prati-paksha (opponents stand).
