Musings from the Pastor: Sermonette 1 on "Jesus, the Lover of our Souls. " IF YOU EVER “SEE” JESUS, YOU WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN! Jesus, The Lord of Glory! Never in the history of the Christian faith has there been so much contemptible cowardly blasphemy about any person as that which has appeared in the past half century about Jesus Christ. Multitudes are seeking to defame and discredit Jesus Christ as unfit to be the Emmanuel, God with us and the savior of Christians. The apostle John, speaking of Jesus, said, When you see him, you shall be like him for you shall see him as he is. 1 John 3:2. Jesus Christ was totally unchanging in his character and his teachings throughout his entire ministry. This cannot be said of any other mortal who ever lived. He never wore a crown, nor an expensive robe. He was never known to have any money, not even a small coin. He never owned a home, nor attended an institution of higher learning. He never carried a weapon of any kind. Jesus never wrote a single word nor signed his name on a piece of parchment. He never coveted any man’s gold or silver nor asked for help from anyone. He never said the words, “I’m sorry”. He never prayed, saying, “forgive me of sin”, though he prayed often, and continually pointed out the sin in other people’s lives, calling them to repentance. He never struck out at any human being in self-defense though he was mobbed and regularly threatened with execution or death by stoning. He spoke truth that amounted to a revelation of God’s person, most of which no one had ever known before. He never traveled more than about 100 miles from the place of his birth. But just to see him was to be indelibly impressed with him. His very countenance spoke of personal purity and power under perfect control. The first rule for public speakers is, don’t preach yourself. But this man Jesus Christ preached nothing but himself. I am the way. I am the truth. I am the life. I am the light of the world. I am the resurrection and the life. I am the bread of life. I am the water of life. I am truth. Before Abraham was, I AM. Jesus claimed to be the one and only source of salvation through the forgiveness of sins. He also claimed that no one could ever know his Father except through knowing him. He stated often that to see him was to see and also to know the Father. By a simple spoken word he controlled the forces of evil that torment all men. He spoke to devils and they obeyed him instantly. He raised the dead, cleansed the lepers with a single word or touch. He even spoke to the sea and the wind and they obeyed his voice. He spoke to a tree and it died instantly. Thus he demonstrated that the mighty power of God was not against mankind but in fact was enlisted in the service of fallen humanity and was bent on securing the greatest good for all humans who would believe in him as the Son of God and keep his commandments. After seeing Jesus, only a fool or a jealous political leader would question his right to use the personal pronoun “I” as much as he did. Jesus calmed that all the dead would one day hear his voice and come forth to life again. He also told that in the judgment at the end of the world he alone would decide the future destiny of ever mortal who ever lived. He claimed that he alone could give life to all who believe to the saving of their souls Jesus was in fact his message. Jesus Christ himself was the perfect picture of all that he taught. Jesus demonstrated God and he did it on a daily basis in everyman’s world. His entire life was spent in the service of fallen and hurting humanity and he knew no racial or social class barriers. Sin was man’s only impediment, and Jesus proclaimed himself as man’s only remedy." Bishop Robert Bufkin.
