Muslims are not permitted to donate to non-muslim charities, let alone one representing Australias war Veterans. Guess we wont be seeing poppies on burkas this year. The appeal raises money for current and former servicemen and servicewomen in need, with support for veterans including assistance with household bills, medical expenses, provision of mobility aids, funeral expenses, home maintenance and food vouchers. The Qur’an is clear about who may receive zakat: “Zakat expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy (muslim only) and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler - an obligation [imposed] by Allah” (9:60).
