Mussels and oysters: do not have empathetic responses, have an undeveloped ganglia that is not comparable to higher sentient crustaceans, and are highly proliferate in a factory farmed setting with no cruelty present. Why is it bad to eat something that doesnt register pain, doesnt suffer and if farmed correctly, has no bad environmental effects, just because it is in the animal kingdom? This is a concept I came across first during a level 200 animal diversity paper and the more people I talk too about it, the more it seems just. Im getting shit for choosing to not eat anything that supports cruelty from people who eat animals and their products and Im also getting shit for eating mussels and oysters from vegans. I have to say to people who eat animals and their products: Youre making extremely cruel and extremely bad environmental decisions, I cant even stress how badly. You have to look into the effects of animal agriculture yourself. Please, To the vegans: I approach the eating of these particular animals with a view that is well informed and thought out, from my university education and from studying in my own time. I and many others agree with the general consensus of the scientific information out there that these may be technically in be animal kingdom, but are not privy to suffering in any way shape or form. Also, I approached this issue from an ethical stance, from a vegan stance. Vegans should be able to be more adaptable to things like this. The two rules to veganism tend to be: Does it suffer? Does it cause bad environmental damage? Mussels and oysters dont do either of these things (if farmed sustainably, the only animals that can actually be farmed sustainably), we should be able to consume them without any guilt on our conscience, yet due to dictionary definitions and technicalities, it seems to be forbidden and earns an instant non-vegan title. This is not a fair title, seeing as the ostrovegan is still making compassionate and environmental choices. When it comes to choosing not to eat these animals, the only legitimate excuse left is that you simply dont like the taste of them.
