My 2nd take on drivers for the week: I volunteer as a firefighter. Most of the time, Im traffic control. My job is to keep the emergency workers on scene safe from moving traffic, and then to either hold vehicles or reroute them in an orderly manner, depending upon the situation. For some reason, there are drivers that want to completely ignore the truck blocking the traffic lane, the big guy in the ANSI 3 yellow reflective vest giving traffic direction, even the ominous sight of huge fire trucks, police cars, ambulances with flashing lights just down the road. Had one this morning. Blind curve, so I blocked at the nearest intersection. And this vehicle stopped, then crossed the double yellow line to drive into the oncoming traffic lane, around my truck with full emergency lights activated. I attempted to get her attention, to no avail - windows up. So I shouted for her to stop. She did, then decided to fuss at me for being an #%^^%%. I tried explaining that was not my intent, but since she didnt stop for a big truck with strobes blocking the road, broke traffic laws for crossing the yellows into oncoming traffic lanes - in a curve, and didnt hear me the first two times I attempted to get her attention, I had no choice but to shout to keep her from running into my fellow emergency workers right around the curve. Reluctantly, she turned around and left, but not before I had to remind her that if she insisted on driving toward the scene, Id have no choice but to inform the state troopers onscene and she would very likely get a ticket. Lady, sorry I yelled. But letting you fly across a hill into a road full of leos and emergency workers trying to help others just isnt an option. If that makes me an #%***%^, Im ok with that. Everybody going home at the end of the call IS that important to me. End of rant . . . for now.
