My 5-year old student as I pick up the phone and start speaking in Portuguese: look daddy, Gabriel can speak Brazilian!. As I pack up my violin I say Bye, Alex!, to which he replies, Tschüß, Gabriel! :) lol! In our last lesson he refused to sing a piece by stating, I dont need to sing this because this is a violin lesson, not a singing lesson! I can sing in a choir, here I only need to play the violin! lol! :) I can never finish his lessons on time due to his ever curious and inquisitive mind: Why do you have only one fine-tuner? Why do you use a shoulder rest instead of a sponge? Why do you shake your hand back and forth when you play (I was just making use of a technique also known as.. vibrato?!! lol!)?! Why is your violin bigger than mine? Why do you wear glasses? Why does my father have to sign your lesson logs? Why this, why that?! I am honing my skills in the art of making up creative impromptu responses to all those never-ending questions! Sometimes I can convince him, sometimes hell just want to play violin standing on his knees just because I can do so... And he will always point out my mistakes, Youre in the wrong part of the bow!, Why arent you using your whole bow there?!, No, this is not my arm, this is my forearm, and this is my elbow and this is my shoulder!; and Ill also hear things like: your violin is so duddy, wheres your cleaning cloth? And my favorite one: Oh, I forgot to bring that...- he stops for a moment, turns his eyes to his dad and says, - but thats my daddys fault, HE should have remembered to bring it!! lol :) And this other one, Alex, have you memorized May Song? - Yes! - He plays the entire May Song from memory; and after listening to it I say, Very good, Alex! Its memorized, theres just one little problem... Its that you started in May Song and ended in the Twinkle, Twinkle variations!! Mimis group classes are a great source of these pearls: - An octave is called an octave because it has 8 legs!! (I guess I call that an octopus!) :) If youre not into teaching kids, I guess you should definitely reconsider that, its just priceless!! :)
