My 86 wagon has an engine problem or symptom. I know the 86 converter is bad and rattly, but the engine does something strange. When I go to fast, say at 80 mph, the engine immediately starts lugging violently, like someone is stepping on a garden hose and turning the engine off on off on off on off on. This happened tonight when I floored up to 85 to pass someone, and I thought the car was dying, but it didnt die. Third time this has happened when I went too fast. What do ya think? It also bogs sometimes when trying to accelerate from a stop, but it cruises fine once it gets up and going. I also learned that if I let the car get down to a quarter tank, it wont run. Suggestions? On a very positive note, this really surprised me, I got exactly 25mpg combined steep mountain desert driving for Saturday. 225 miles divided by 8.8 gallons.
