My African Experience: My Facebook friends, I just returned for visiting Ghana, Africa. This was an incredible experience. It was in fact a home-Going. Everywhere I went Ian was looking at the faces of mother, my sisters, and myself. My family ancestry originated in Ghana. Being there generated a strong feeling connectedness that I had never felt. Everywhere I went, I was greeted with, “welcome home!” Ghanaians are a very peaceful and family oriented people. Crime rate is unbelievably low. I visited the castles where, over 400 years ago, my ancestors suffered at the hands of the British and Portugese in order for them to have a labor force to work the sugar cane, cotton, cocoa, and other commodities plantations in the West (the Americas, Brazil and the Caribbean). If you are of African descent, your ancestors came from “somewhere”. That somewhere is Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Benin etc. There was a very large population (15,000 plus) of African Americans who have return to countries like Ghana. They are very strong and well organized. Unlike the U.S. they are very supportive of each other. I had the opportunity to meet and train with some outstanding martial artists. One of them was Master Simon Koku Gluikpor, a Taekwondo instructor who is also Ghana’s national team coach. Master Gluikpor and I have pledged to support each other. My visit o Ghana was very enlightening. I believe that every African American should visit countries such Ghana in border to regain a sense of identity. Because, a lack of identity is a major part of our problem as an ethnic group.
