My Article-letter in this weeks Mercury Hertfordshire-- Footpath row -Putting the dead before living ? .--- I not from your article Graveyard path seems unlikely ( Mercury 9th October ) the various objections voiced by some locals for a footpath to be made through a church graveyard as a safer route for children going to school. Your report highlighted concerns by parents who said the current route to school was dangerous as it involved crossing dangerous roads with lots of cars and that an alternative footpath would be welcome. I find some of the objections to the footpath anachronistic in the 21st century ie the implication that the long dead cadavers would not rest in peace if a footpath traversed the area of Holy Trinity Church, Hertford Heath. When I went to school more than 50 years ago, we walked via a footpath though St Marys Church graveyard in Cheshunt to school. The idea that we place the well being of the long dead over the lives of children will no doubt be viewed by some folks as being something out of medieval times.
