My Auld Lang Syne story is about this Weller Zona Vase, My wife, - TopicsExpress

My Auld Lang Syne story is about this Weller Zona Vase, My wife, Debra and I called it the Lovebirds vase. We were very new at pottery collecting at this time and for us to spend a lot of money on a vase was hard to justify and, frankly, we were a couple of newbie scaredy-cats when it came to what pottery was really worth. This Weller vase came up on Ebay, way back in 2007 and we both loved it right away and decided to try and buy it. The big moment came and went in a flash with an ending bid a bit north of $900. We were horrified and blown out of the water. We couldnt imagine spending that much on a piece of pottery, no matter how much we liked it. As time went on and we kept buying, attending shows and auctions our perspective changed. We knew that collecting pottery was a slippery slope and as ones taste and sophistication improves so do the price tags. We looked back at this Weller vase and thought about how we missed an opportunity to own it because of fear. We then struck out boldly to find another, .....at twice the cost if need be. Easier said than done. We inquired with dealers, well known pottery mavens and others collectors with no luck at all. We were told only a few of these turned up in the many years of collecting, but they would keep an eye out as well. Many years later an example did turn up on Ebay. It had seen some wear and had a hairline on one side. But it was the Lovebirds vase. As it turned out, we ended up buying it for $100 and had it professionally restored for a couple hundred and it looks great. Debra and I finally realized a long time search for this lovely and hard to find Weller vase.
