My Captive Thought: Pastor Bernie Diaz, November 4, 2014 The first Tuesday of November means election day in the United States and very short lines if any at voting precincts for mid-term (non-Presidential) election cycles like this one. Though I breezed through the ballot box within minutes with my eldest daughter, a first time voter, we had an interesting conversation in preparation for today’s vote about politics and public policy in general, which admittedly has fascinated me for some time, and in particular, the ideologies that lead to people’s voting patterns and party affiliations. I can peg I would estimate with almost 90 plus percent certainty, what someone’s political party affiliation is just by a brief review of their theology or what it is they believe about God. In other words, what makes someone a Republican? Generally, in terms of the root ideology or modern worldview inherent in that party, a “conservative” will lean and vote Republican, simply because that party- the GOP (Grand Ole’ Party) will adopt a more conservative political platform. To be a “conservative” implies that your primary impulse is to conserve something valuable from history or tradition....
