My Childhood Memories 9 :) My Earliest Memories :) I was born in Kochi in 1955 when my dad was posted at Aluva. When I was about one year, he was transferred to Bellary. I dont remember these events, but were told to me by elders. However, few events in Bellary remain imprinted in my mind & wish to share here. We were in Bellary for about 18-20 months before my dad got transferred to Nagpur. 1. A Bee-sting:- We stayed in a building with ground & first floor in Bellary. The house had a well & pumping facility to lift water to the overhead tank. Every morning, dad used to start the pump when he used to take me too, with him. One such morning, we were attacked by a swarm of bees & I had a sting on my cheek. The memory is fresh as it pained a lot. An immediate application of asafoetida mixed in water helped relieve the pain. A neighbour also gave some fresh sandal paste which gave soothing effect. 2. Snake in our rear room:- One night, when I was escorted by my mother to the bath room, we encountered a cobra with raised hood hissing at us. We sprinkled some asafoetida solution in the area & the snake slowly left the place. We were so scared, that we shifted our bedroom upstairs from that very night. 3. Scorpions:- There were gaps in the tiles on the floor and sightings of scorpions was very common. My mom used to therefore make it a point to sweep the floor both in the morning & night, to get rid of the uninvited guests. I was a little over two and a half years, when we left Bellary around end 1957 or early 1958.
