My Favorite Car #15 :--- CITROEN DS 19 ( 1955) If something like post Script exists in the vocabulary ...then for sure a PRE- Script must be there ....( As a Non- English speaking poor folk from India ..always I have this doubt :-) ) Pre Script :- The letters *DS* spoken in french spell out the word deesse, which means GODDESS reinforces a FACT...this should be my favorite #1 in the list of 40 !! ...................Dont laugh ......At a time when AIR TRAVEL was capturing the imagination of the Masses the ** DS** ( Citroen DS) translated that sense of awe on to the Road ( Pradeep Mohan.....you was my inspiration for this particular sentence :-)..guess ?? ) Yes!! I do believe CITROEN DS model was one of the mid twentieth centurys most Magical Cars . Citroens reputation for radicalism & to move beyond its earlier achievements ( their 30 s Traction Avant & 2 CV of end 40s in particular ) --- The result was *DS* !!............. The most STRIKING feature of the *DS* is its uncompromising sculptural profile ( for sure I forgot the power train & stuff Rakshit Shastry), Which links the FRONT & REAR with single sweep, without any details interrupting the dynamic effect of the aesthetic DECISION ...this is done by eliminating the Radiator Grille, integrating the head lamps into the form and introduction of subtle curves in to the front & rear windows............HIGH cultural achievement for its time ( Ask Cultural Critics like Roland Barthes :-) )..& to see it as a PURELY MAGICAL OBJECT!! One more sensational thing about this *DS* is ** Air- travel** :-)....Designed to cope with the variable quality of the French Roads than ...is Hydro- Pneumatic Suspension, which allows the car to rise up into the Air...a motion which makes the passenger feel that the Car is about to TAKE-OFF ( I have experienced in a later HOLDEN of Narain Karthiekeyans family ..which i forgot :( ) ..hm!! If given a chance to talk about this MAGICAL OBJECT.....guess that will be a never ending story .....as have seen at least 20 times a Month since I was School going kid ..at least for 10 or more years ..driven by Mrs & Mr Nejedtly....( A Swiss National..who had a FRP boat manufacturing unit plus a fabric Buttons Mfg unit at Coimbatore.-- being a Caramelite hope you remember Kumaragurubaran..-The Bunglow is just opposite Race course Coffee Day . .) ++++++ We mustnt forget that an OBJECT is the the best MESSENGER of a world above that of Nature: One can see easily in an OBJECT at once a perfection & absence of ORIGIN ....hope you agree Rahul Manthalkar..... The DS - the GODDESS has all the features !! +++++++++++
