My Favourite Christmas Story ... I call it Family Ties ... I remember the day clearly back in December 2006, as I sat at my desk working away, happy with the world and anticipating the upcoming holidays. Suddenly, my phone rang and I could see it was Kerry calling and I thought this was probably just a check in about our plans with the three little ones, aged 4,3 and 2, that evening. “Hello there!” I said with joy. “Did you tie the tree up last night?” my lovely wife said. I immediately flashed back to the night before where the image of me watching football came to mind and a faint recollection of Kerry asking me to tie the tree up before I went to bed. I’m pretty sure I had responded “Uh-Huh” … but the details were fuzzy. I came clean - “Uh … no … why?” Out of nowhere, my honeys normally loving and charming demeanor vanished as she reeled out a string of expletives that brought me to tears. “The F***ing tree just fell over and my f***ing ornaments are broken all over the floor and I’m holding it up with one hand trying to keep the kids out of this f****ing mess!!!” she screamed. I felt shame … guilt … and I envisioned my life at home would never be the same. I eventually gained the courage to get home and help undo the damage I knew I had done. I walked in to discover my Mom-In-Law who stepped up to help clean up the mess. Things seemed more peaceful than I expected. Kerry seemed to have returned to her normal happy self despite the mess and my miss. I asked if all was okay and she said yes. She smiled and said that Drew had put the whole situation into perspective for her. “How?” I asked. She explained that through her frustration and anger as she was cleaning up the ornaments from the floor, my boy exclaimed “Its ok Mommy. Christmas isnt about the ornaments, it’s about Love!” Wow. He actually said that. Now were pretty sure he grabbed this line from some kid TV show but I had to hand it to him, his timing was perfect! I owe him one down the road:) So please remember to tie up your f***ing tree! I know I always have, every year since 2006. Enjoy the holidays with family and friends!
