My First Four Thousand Years ... When I was studying guitar with Robbie Basho in the late 60s Robbie really made a point to introduce me to other musicians. Will Ackerman and Alex Degrassi were also studying with him so I met them. He was recording on John Faheys label even though he didnt really admire him all that much. But he also introduced me to Malvina Reynolds who was a wonderful person. She and her husband had a modest home on Blake just off Shattuck and Id come over and play and sing for them. I love autoharps so it was fun to play hers. She had a collection of beautifully crafted instruments. One of the great things about folk music is that the only credentials you need are the ability to stir the soul in people by way of your music. If you have that people really dont care whether you studied at Juilliard or just taught yourself sitting alone in your bedroom with your harps and guitars.
