My German friend of Italian origin, Dominico told me a very interesting story on how Slovak army was fighting on behalf of Germans during the world war 2. When Germany, Italy and Japan finally ended the war, a peace treaty was signed officially by these nations. Decades passed and after the soviet liberation and after Czech and Slovak republics split, the Slovakian government decided to join the NATO. But then technically speaking they were still at war with the Allies!! (For no peace treaty was signed with Slovakia since the WWII times, so they were so to speak still at war even though there were no fights/battles etc... It challenges our maturity when we hear such things - wtf a war without battles and combats? But they need signed treaties and doctrines to confirm two countries are not at war. What a strange world :)
