My Grandmother has told us the stories about remembering where she was & what she was doing on December 7th, 1941, VE & VJ Day(s), when President Kennedy was shot, etc...every detail & I was always amazed with it. As I remember this day 13 years ago, its the significance of the day that will always stay with you. We had the Weather Channel on the TV in the office when one of the custodians came into the office & asked if we had seen where a plane had flown into one of the towers of the World Trade Center. We turned the news on & began watching the live coverage. As we watched the events of that day unfold, the 2nd plane into the twin towers, reports of an explosion at the Pentagon, everyone was stunned. Then, reports of a plane had gone down in western Pennsylvania. I received a phone call from then Whg-Ohio County EMA Director the late John Tagg that he had spoken with the State EMA office in Charleston & they would be conducting a statewide conference call to brief everyone on the information they had received from FEMA. Each county EMA office was asked to go on 16-hour operational periods until further notice (we went for 4 days, then 12-hour periods for the next week). Following that, then Sheriff the late Matt Clark called & asked for us to brief the County Commission during their meeting that morning. We had 3 conference call briefings that day as no one knew if additional attacks would take place. We began receiving numerous emails & faxes over the next several days. The next few days everyone was on edge & on alert.
