My Grandmother was 40 years old when she had my father, which was old in those days, so was a very Victorian Grandma, but I spent so many happy times with her in Chestnut Cottage in West Cross. It really was the good old days - I loved her to bits and her home cooking. She had a massive garden and planted all sorts of fruits and vegetables and had a cottage garden bed too as well as a holly tree - just magic. She had chooks as well as a greenhouse where she grew tomatoes and lots of other produce. Going to her home was any childs paradise. I just absolutely loved it. My love of plants obviously came from her influence because she would spent her last penny on a plant for her wonderful garden. Before she married, she was a Housekeeper to a wealthy family in Eaton Square in London and used to order their shopping from Fortnum and Masons and organise their trips to their country property in Scotland. She reminded me so much of Mrs Bridges in Upstairs and Downstairs. Came across this photo of her with my Auntie Emily (with glasses) to her right. Must have been taken a long time ago but would like to share. Auntie Emmie, as I called her, was always very stern but what I would give for a few minutes with them right now. Fabulous memories.
