My Great Grandfather, Nikola Frkovic, a miner of Croatian descent, - TopicsExpress

My Great Grandfather, Nikola Frkovic, a miner of Croatian descent, left the Austria-Hungary Empire Army and immigrated to the USA around 1900. He made his way to Park City and died at age 38 of Consumption after many years breathing the dust filled air in the Silver Mines of Utah. There was little safety equipment in those days other than the red Kerchief the miners used over their mouths to slow the ingestion of the deadly dust. “Died age 38” was a very common epitaph for a worker in those days. As a child I was taught the true meaning and origin of the word “redneck”. It was something all Miners had in common; whether Black, White, Asian or any other race, you were brothers united not just by the color of a kerchief worn around your neck, but, by a union that worked to improve your life and the lives of all miners. The laborers and their unions are responsible for this holiday; A celebration of the WORKER I am proud to be a redneck Happy Labor Day everyone
