My Great-aunt was a religious woman but also a bit superstitious. She believed that on the first day of the new year a man should be the first to cross the threshold. Being a widow, my Grandfather and I would get up early on New Years Day and drive to my great aunts house where we proceeded to walk through every doorway in her house. She would give me a quarter (like $5 today) and we would go back to my grandparents house where Grandma would have a big breakfast waiting. I treasure this memory since I know of no one else who ever heard of this being done.
