My Hospice Buddy As you well know, visiting the sick, the elderly and giving a good impression of Islam especially in todays context are highly rewardable acts. Its with this in mind that we encourage as many of you as possible to become Hospice Buddies where youll be able to do all of the above. This is a great opportunity for you to put your faith into action. This service is whatever you want it to be; from spending time together and having a chat, playing board games, watching TV, helping with bedside errands, writing letters, assisting on a stroll, helping decorate your nails (women), reading favourite magazines or newspapers etc. The list is endless because it is ultimately whatever the patients at the hospice want it to be. The Myriad Foundation have a recruitment day on Saturday 29th November between 1-4pm for My Hospice Buddy at St Anns Hospice in Heald Green. There will be an introduction to the service, a Q&A, tour of the hospice, light refreshments followed by the application process. Youll need to bring with you your passport, 2 proofs of address and referee details for references. Make sure you confirm your attendance by emailing us on [email protected] Below are some reflective posts from some of the existing Hospice Buddies. Just came out from the hospice! Alhamdulillah it was a humbling experience. We sat with a lady who just wanted someone around her as she gets very anxious on her own. She wasnt feeling great and was breathing heavy, but finds comfort when people are around her. All she wanted was for us to talk amongst ourselves while she fell asleep! Bless her Just finished, spent time with a lovely lady with breathing difficulties. All she needed was to hold her hand and a gentle head massage to calm her pain and anxiety! Very rewarding experience! ... Just to let you know I went hospice today for about hour and sat with a patient. He had holiday pictures on the wall and was sad to see his deterioration within a year. The illness had disfigured his face and affected his speech, nonetheless I understood when he spoke. He asked me early on what my purpose for coming to hospice was so I explained about the Myriad Foundation. Before I left he thanked me for coming and asked me if it was ok if he asked me a personal question. I replied sure, so he proceded to ask me which religion I followed. When I told him (Islam) he asked my view on what was going on in the name of Islam in the news. After I explained Islam was about trying to establish peace and helping humanity etc he told me he was Catholic and also prayed for peace. I would say worth while visit for both as on way home I contemplated the importance of health and not taking it for granted and the Hadith where the Prophet sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam mentions taking advantage of your health before sickness. ...Alhamdulillah it was a really good experience for us and the patient. She was so grateful to have company and to have someone to talk to and you could see and feel her appreciation. She made us promise to come back and visit her which shows how much it meant to her. Insha Allah were going to see her next week and help her write a letter which shes unable to do at the moment. So generally, a really amazing and rewarding experience
