My Life: This is one of the shelters I lived in, along with a picture of where I worked during that time. A bad heroin addiction, among other things, led me here. I weighed about 165-170lbs. My normal weight was 210. The friend that dropped me off here along with a great friend I met while I lived here both passed away from drug overdoses. I slept in a room with 7 other men. About 50 guys total. We ate together, went to addiction meetings together, showered together and lived together 24 hours a day. It beat sleeping on the streets or in a Jeep. This was the start of my drug rehab. We worked 8-10 hours a day for about $2 an hour and a canteen card which could be redeemed at the canteen at the shelter for food and drinks. So at a certain point in your rehab, on the weekends, we could spend time in the day room, watch TV or play games, and snack on burgers, nachos & junk food. Im an easy pleaser so I was always excited for cheeseburgers and snickers lol. The work we put in was in exchange for room & board. During this time, I tried to keep my whereabouts a secret but someone found out. She started visiting me when I got to the point where I earned visitation hours. I was very insecure about this for obvious reasons. This was a VERY low point. She kept making the drive and kept pouring love into me. She was my best friend who had been away at college. When I had NOTHING to offer, she loved me and never gave up on me. A few years later, I put a ring on it ;) and she became my wife. A few years after that - the mother to our beautiful daughters. I love her to the moon back & always will because of how she loved me during this time. Im grateful for the The Salvation Army USA, another chance, and for the moment of clarity I had that ultimately led me to reach out for help when I was ready to quit.
