My Maryland Ironman Race Report My minimalist training program - TopicsExpress

My Maryland Ironman Race Report My minimalist training program this year made for a little longer swim but no surprise here. It was a rolling swim start which was new to me, you chose your estimated time and marshaled up to start with all the other like minded folks. I think this type of start creates a little more bumping within the group but the benefit is no one swims over top of you. As always I was there very early and was able just to sit back and soak up the energy as folks fiddled with their bikes, gear and nutrition before the swim start. The bike was two flat loops with only one hill rising and falling 8ft. The bike course went through a big wildlife reserve where we saw a number of turkey vultures and bald eagles. The first loop was quite windy for the full loop (funny how wind works on a bike ride); on the second loop the wind was gone (nice), also on the second loop the tide had come in so the road was flooded in parts which made for a fun ride though about 6 inches of water. The sun was hot but with the wind I did not really notice. This was one of the best courses I have ridden of any Ironman and it was nice knowing there were no big climbs in your day 9head down and pedal hard). The run course was as flat as the bike and it was three out and backs on the same route so you went back and forth with the middle being old downtown where all the folks where celebrating finishers all day. Because of the back and forth you were always with other runners right up to the end so this kept you motivated all night long. Again hot and humid while the sun was up but it did cool off later. My finish was good but not my best; with my minimal training I expected this so I am happy with the race. I will be looking to head back and do it again when I am at my best as I think this is a course one can fly on. I recommend this race to anyone looking for a nice late fall Ironman.
