My Mom always used to buy caged birds being peddled on the street, open the cage door, and release the birds into the air. She always said birds were meant to be free. I believe it was English novelist Charlotte Bronte who said, “I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will.” Today I remember my Mom’s acts, and Charlotte Bronte’s words, as I pray for the courage to do the right thing and walk away from a situation that would rob me of the power to make a choice. For what does it profit a man to win the world, but suffer the loss of this soul. Beggars can be choosers. One just needs to distinguish between one’s PRIDE, and one’s PRINCIPLES.
