My Morning Paper September 6th 2014 The Sheer Absurdity of it all “We owe nation an apology over vote – Wilchcombe claims govt. had to reject gaming poll vote.” The Tribune, 5th September 2014; excerpt from this article, “Tourism Minister Obie Wilchcombe said the Christie administration “owes” the Bahamian people an apology for the decision to go against the majority ‘no’ vote for the January 28th, 2013 gaming referendum.” The question that I have is what could be so pressing, sol much more important to this government that it would ‘force’ elected officials to go against the voice of people that elected them and put the very essence of democracy at risk? Well to minister Wilchcombe and others in his party and that support his party it is quite simple; “However he [Wilchcombe] said this position was abandoned after Central Bank warned that unregulated web shop were expected to harm the financial services sector.” Does anyone saw what just happened their? The good minister just about conceded to the fact that his government never expected a ‘no’ vote and had already planned to do whatever they needed to do to regulate web shops, even if it meant subverting democracy ; the voice of the people. The whole ‘gambling referendum’ was nothing more than ‘smoke and mirrors’; a mere exercise in futility. Here is my reasoning behind my position, it is quite simple actually and I do stand to be corrected in my reasoning; if the people vote ‘no’ and the government did what they had indeed honored the voice of the people and had closed the web shops then the ‘harm to the financial services sector’ would have been eliminated. The reason/explanation being offered by this government, to me, is absurd, and holds no logic. It calls the intelligence of the average person into question for accepting this as fact and should offend any right thinking citizen of the Bahamas even if you voted for web shop gaming END
