My Mother was diagnosed as Paranoid Schizophrenic, and as this news article states, it is a very misunderstood illness. Even the doctors who were treating it couldnt agree. Mom had some really horrible treatments....electric shock, a lot of diet experiments, and all sorts of attempts. One of her doctors even told us kids that out of the six children, someone would develop the disease, because they thought it was genetic. Another doctor blamed it on her childhood, and stated there must have been abuse (which there was not). We have had Christian people who told us it was because Mom was full of demons, and they tried casting the demons out. Some of the church groups would refuse to take her on outings, because they were afraid of her behavior. I became her chaperon for many of those, so that she would be allowed to go. There were times I was afraid of her behavior, times I was embarrassed by her behavior, but as I grew older, I realized she never chose to suffer from that illness...and it IS an illness. It stole her life....her career....her memories.....her emotions.....and way too much from all of us. It thrills my heart to see there is finally a breakthrough in understanding and hopefully treating this horrible illness.
