The film received an award at the Sundance Film Festival and is now showing in Japan. Ai was assaulted by police and later arrested while collecting the names of over 5,000 students killed in a school collapse in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. He was released on bail, but his access to the outside world remains restricted. Alison Klayman, the American who made the documentary, has seen him at the best of times and worst of times. She talks to us about his way of life and the meaning of freedom of expression. NO APOLOGIES
