My New Exhibition starts this weekend! “Land Rush to Gold Rush, Jaara Country 1836 – 51” This Exhib is a Satelite Event to Art Fields – currently showing at the Market Building. Lyttleton Studio - 94a Lyttleton Street. Opening times: Saturdays & Sundays : 12 - 4 pm, Aug – Sept 1st Eliza Tree : Artist and Expeditioner, creates a visual narrative, through Paintings, Text and Maps, describing the 15 years before Gold. This Exhibition challenges the misconception that Victoria and Castlemaine began with Gold! Describing instead, the Indigenous Cultural Landscape, rich with diverse ecosystems and ecology, plant foods, flora and fauna – home to the Indigenous Tribes and Clans which had inhabited this region for millennia, which were so rapidly and violently displaced by squatters, and their sheep. Beginning with the journey of Major Mitchell in 1836, we follow the rapid expansion of pastoralism and colonisation in Victoria - Land Rush, to the discovery of Gold - the Gold Rush of the 1850’s. I focus upon the Mt Alexander region, using a collection of primary text sources, quotes and maps, combined with contemporary information, to help reconstruct a more accurate insight into the land and the people. In doing so understand the process of environmental change, and cultural injustice. The paintings are rich and bold, revealing the ‘Australia Felix’ before Gold. Lyttleton Studio - 94a Lyttleton Street. Opening times: Saturdays & Sundays : 12 - 4 pm, Aug – Sept 1st Artist Talks : 2pm & 3 pm Launch : Tues 13th, 5 – 7 pm
