My Parvo Story: So with all the talk of vaccinations lately it - TopicsExpress

My Parvo Story: So with all the talk of vaccinations lately it has been on my mind that I should share my parvo story with you all. If even one person can avoid this horrible disease from my story it is worth telling. In January of 2013 I had three litters of puppies, all ready to go on the 15th of Jan. The first litter was 8, the second litter was 3 and the last litter was 5 (number of puppies). On the 16th I had made arrangements to deliver 7 of them to Sacramento and another 3 to LA. We started the trip at 5am, and arrived Sac at 8am. Before leaving, the puppies were running around and playing like CRAZY. At delivery in Sac I took them all down and set up a little play pen for them to get out and poop and pee. At this time two of the puppies looked depressed. BUT they had been in a truck, in the back seat, on a super windy, bumpy road for three hours, not strange that some of them were car sick. I met with the first 7 people, all got their puppies and headed home and I headed to LA. We arrived and the last three puppies seemed down too. NO diarrhea, no throwing up, but they seemed listless. I chalked it up to car sick. Then the phone started ringing. By 5pm that night two puppies had died! All the rest of the 10 I had delivered were throwing up and sick. This was a sunday evening, BTW, no way to go to the vet until morning. I told them all I suspected parvo and by 8am the following morning all the surviving puppies were hospitalized. Now, I called my husband and had him call in sick to work the next day, he took the remaining puppies to the vet and ALL of them had it! All were hospitalized. I have to give huge thanks to all the puppy owners and their vets and mine, all the puppies were saved! (other than the fist two who died so quickly) The bill(s) ended up being close to 20k! and of course I was responsible for ALL of them. Now a word on vaccinations. ALL the puppies had had two parvo shots before leaving home at 8 weeks! The first at 6 weeks and the second at 8 weeks. Of course they HAD parvo when I gave that second shot and I didnt know it. While this was all going on I had some very long talks with both my vet and the neo-par vet and we set up a new vaccination schedule. While we were at high risk for parvo (the first year after getting it) we gave Neo-par at 4 weeks, 5 weeks and 8 weeks and a 5-way at 6 weeks. This is per the Neo-par vet who was WONDERFUL with me spending over an hour on the phone with educating me so this never happening again. Now that we are going on two years out we no longer give the 4 week shots and instead do Neo-par at 5 and 6 weeks and a 5 way at 8 weeks. If the puppies stay until 10 weeks we do a neo-par booster. We have not had another case of parvo since then and it is no doubt still here as it can live for many years in the soil and carpets. We bleached EVERYTHING possible but you cant possibly get it all and puppies can shed it for weeks as well. So in final I want to wrap this up by pointing out in 18 years of breeding mini aussies I have had one case of vaccine reaction. A dose of benedril was given and puppy was fine. By far the worst time of my life was going through the parvo experience. I HIGHLY recommend proper vaccinations so that anyone here can avoid what I went through. There is just no excuse for not vaccinating and I promise you parvo is EVERYWHERE! These puppies of mine had never even been outside! We had no foot traffic anywhere near them.... and yet they still got it. If anyone has any questions feel free to comment or PM me. I am happy to pass on the wonderful information I received during this time if it can help even one person I am at your service:-)
