My President 2013- Yameen Abdulla Yameen also has a long career in the People’s Majlis as an elected Member of Parliament for four successive terms from 1993 onwards. He has represented constituencies in the Atolls of South Miladhunmadulu and Mulaku. In this period Yameen took charge of key legislations affecting the area of trade and commerce. He was also noted within the People’s Majlis as a strong proponent of introducing the current multiparty system of democratic governance practiced in the Maldives. Yameen was also the main proponent of enfranchising youth by lowering the minimum voting age to 18. As Chair of the National Security Committee in the People’s Majlis, Yameen oversaw the successful completion of important legislation related to public safety such as the laws related to combating gang-violence and other violent crimes. In addition to his political career, Yameen spent a large part of his life as a community organizer in Machchangolhi Ward (an administrative district of Male’, Maldives) where he was raised. During his tenure as Machchangolhi Ward Chief, the district was recognized for hosting popular cultural events and for the high quality of education provided by community-based private school Ahmadiyya. After a few years in People’s Alliance[ (PA), a political party he helped form, Yameen left to join the Progressive Party of Maldives(PPM) in 2010. He has served as the head of PPM’s Parliamentary Group since the party’s formation and currently occupies the post after being elected to it at PPM’s first Congress held between January 17 and 19, 2013. Yameen has also announced intentions to contest PPM’s presidential primaries in order to run for President in the 2013 elections. Source.> candidacy
