My Privateer came with a 2008 8hp Mercury with controls and electric start. I finally got a chance to test it out today and it started immediately, running like a top. The Merrimack River, where my yacht club is located, has 2-4 knot currents depending on tide, moon phase, etc. I think that 8hp is not enough to muscle out the river, especially in any kind of chop. I plan on putting a Honda in the engine well next summer and hope to squeeze in at least a 9.9hp. I am not ruling out the 15-20hp models either if they fit without too many modifications to the hull or well. For now, the 8hp Merc seems to fit perfectly on my 1960 MFG Carefree which is only 12 8 long.
