My Red Thumb campaign launched to remind people not to use their mobile phones while driving Devon and Cornwall Police, along with other agencies, is backing the My Red Thumb campaign to warn drivers of the dangers of using their mobile phone while driving. The idea is to remind drivers not to use a phone whilst driving by painting their thumb nails red – so every time a person sees their red thumb they are reminded of the message. Research shows that using a hand-held or hands-free mobile device while driving is a significant distraction and greatly increases the risk of the driver crashing. Drivers who use their phones while driving: - Are 4 times more likely to crash – injuring or killing themselves or other people - Fail to see road signs - React more slowly and take longer to brake - Feel more stressed and frustrated Why not paint your thumb red for a day to remind yourself of this message? Take a picture of your painted thumb and post it on Facebook or Twitter to show your support for the campaign.
