My Revenge Ever so very subtly, and in quite rapid succession the days lead from immortality to all thoughts real of nevermore, funereal thoughts, it is such a progression of years gone past, so now, do I see the fate I’ve sealed? It is so very thought-provoking, this life I’ve led, time spent in growing up, did I grow wise?, oh where the time went in living, loving, with families, and by myself alone; will there be some remembrance when I’m under stone? Child of fifties, teen of sixties, woman of seventies beyond, now late forties, do I still have time, to sing a little song? Oh heavens yes! and though voice is not one to carry a tune, I’ll sing my soul, to heaven send, before my life’s reduced to ruin. It is now, it is here, that I’ve come to finally realize perhaps I do have a gift, has it been right before my eyes? Nevermore shall I remorse that I have a gift of hope and if others see the dark, then I shall continue to give rope. I recall my younger days, even though my smile shone bright, some would say “she can’t be gay, always!, it tisn’t right...” How dare they! but dare they did to keep my smile from them hid, and I wallowed in some despair, for my smile, they did not care. They were my elders, I thought for them I should revere their wisdom...they’d lived, but their words did sear into my brain, to see me refrain from smiling all the while, little did I know, until late now, beneath their clever guile. Now I’m aged somewhat more, and to me, ‘tis not a chore to give gaily my hope, and rope, to others around me dour, so for you who tear me down, here’s my back, and front door, for you may enter, and you may leave, for I’ll not be sour. I’ll enter my dotage, I’ll enter old age, with all my smiling grace and if you see me smiling, in silk and oak, there be on my face, then you will know, I found the wisdom, to think with heart and soul that living well and smiling awhile, is indeed the revenge of old! ©KRJ 20 November 1999
