My Review on COSMOS: A Spacetime Odyssey I am sure by now most - TopicsExpress

My Review on COSMOS: A Spacetime Odyssey I am sure by now most of you have already watched the first episode of COSMOS. I am very happy that someone decided to reboot one of the most inspiring TV shows ever made. For now, I will express my opinion on what I expected and how did it go. ➤ Visual Effects: The new cosmos series contains stunning visual and sound effects that must have taken a lot of time to make. I also appreciate how they put things into scale just the way we expect them to be. Traveling between planets, showing how much we have learned about them and passing by the Voyager spacecraft were all inspiring moments and wonderfully illustrated in breathtaking visuals. For visuals, I give it 5/5. ➤ Science: Very solid, updated and well illustrated. However, it was too general and didn’t go a little in depth as the original COSMOS did. I liked when they showed the satellites orbiting Earth indicating that this is a different time where technology has gone far enough to place one satellite for each purpose. The sequence of information was also organized and well ordered. The new cosmic calendar was wonderful but it would have been better if they included more visuals. For the science part, I give it 5/5. ➤ Music: There was poor choice of background music. The music of the original cosmos, composed by Vangelis, was uniform and so wonderful that we still feel connected to the cosmos everytime we listen to it. This time, however, the music was all over the place. Almost every scene had its own music making it difficult to catch up with the uniformity of the subject. I am sure, Hans Zimmer would have made an incredible music if they asked. For music, I give it 3/5 ➤ Animation: I love cartoons and I love animations, but I think COSMOS is a special case. They have used more animations than they should. What makes the original COSMOS special is that they used real characters to make us feel like we truly went into a journey through time. I wouldn’t have minded if it took them a longer time to make it, but real characters would have been much nicer. For this part, I give it 3.5/5 ➤ Narration: This is the serious part. Neil did a great job! I loved his passion for science during the whole episode, but his narration was just too fast that you don’t feel emotionally connected to what he says. Carl Sagan would give more time to his audience to think and decide. You would actually make a decision before Carl moves to the next sentence. Carl Sagan used poetry that made even non-native English speakers feel emotionally connected to every word he says. Neil is a gifted man, but Carl Sagan was just out of this world. To sum it up here, I didn’t experience the new COSMOS with Neil the same way I did with Carl’s COSMOS. For this part, I give it 3.5/5. Attracting Audience: I can’t decide about this now until I see the next episodes. All in all, the show was great, the aim was great but few adjustments would have made it better from my perspective. It’s COSMOS after all. Still, I am looking forward to the new episodes and highly recommend you not to miss them too. There is still so much left to learn and much more left to unlearn.
