My Saturday night with Ben. After learning earlier this week - TopicsExpress

My Saturday night with Ben. After learning earlier this week that my soon to be 4 year old rescue dog Ben (his birthday is celebrated this week along with his 5 yr old rescue brother Aiden) is yeast intolerant, Ive been running around like Shirley MacLaine in Terms of Endearment forcing the world around us to cooperate to make his world a little more comfortable. Bens symptoms have been what appeared to be chronic ear infections but were instead an over production of yeast in his ears causing him a lot of discomfort and flapping of the ears. His Frito-feet which my girls thought was cute, is another sign and his general body oder that was unlike any dog I ever knew. When I researched it, all points led to yeast intolerance. This made total sense especially since Ive started cooking his dinner and it subsided for a short while. It seemed to kick back up the 2 weeks I added a lot of brown rice and potatoes. Yeast thrives on sugar and well, carbs turn to sugar the same as for humans. Bam! Poor Benny was agitated again and within days of the agitation started the ear flapping. So Ive changed his diet to a meat, usually ground turkey or beef, equal amount of lentils, a veggie (spinach, carrots, green beans, beets) a couple of tablespoons of Greek yogurt and a small serving of fruit. Both boys LOVE this stuff! The lentils are giving them the texture of potato or pasta now and they dont seem to miss it. Its great. Bathing Ben in white vinegar and tea tree oil was equally as important to slough off the yeast that is sitting on his skin. I did it in the tub so his paws could soak in it and it would get in between them. Im not gonna lie, Im exhausted and that gorgeous bathroom looked like a fur coat blew up in it but to make both dogs comfortable I would do it again (and probably will next week until I know for sure its all under control.) So that was my Saturday night on top of making a weeks worth go food for my wonderful dog-sitter while Im away on business this week. I used to laugh at older people who seemed to love their pets more than anyone else or took better care of them. I love my girls and my mom but I wont lie, these boys have always been the first ones there when no one else was the last 4-5 years and those seemed to be the loneliest for me. Im going to do whatever I can to keep them happy and healthy for as long as I can. Who knows what secrets they could share if they become disgruntled. Peace and Paws
