~~~ My Soliloquy ~~~ Imagine, if you will, walking down the sidewalk of a busy street, discussing (though more like arguing) all manner of political topics with a liberal friend. Simultaneously, you spot a homeless man huddled in an alley. You immediately take pity and reach for your wallet to give the man a little financial assistance. Before you can grab it, your liberal friends hand is already in your pocket. He dips into your wallet, and pulls out a $100 bill, gifting it to the wide-eyed hobo with a self-satisfied grin. Youre confused and angry; who the hell is he to give away your money? Why the hell did you do that? You snap? Because he needed help, obviously. Your soon-to-be-ex friend scoffs, as if the answer was plainly obvious. So why didnt you use your own money? You fume, stashing your wallet back into your pocket. Your friend adopts a vacant look reminiscent of a 4 year-old asked to perform calculus. He ponders this question for a moment, and finally shrugs. Because you make more than me. He says, totally serious. This anecdote describes the idea of redistribution of wealth on a more relatable level. Forced charity is not charity at all. You cannot force a person to hand over his or her own hard-earned money if they dont want to. Charity has always been all about those who have doing what they can for those who have not. You cant legislate goodness in people. What you do instead is create resentment between those who are forced to give, and those who are taking, and, eventually, those who are receiving. Yes there is poverty in the world, and yes there is poverty in America, but Americans are always more than willing to give when its needed. Demanding that people perform good deeds is a sure-fire way to make them not want to help out. Instead of forcing people to help the needy, why dont you look at WHY people are in a situation where they need help, and attack the root of the issue? Lets stop putting a band-aid on a broken leg, here. ~Sierra Marlee
