My Thoughts on Depression & Mental Illness During my lifetime - TopicsExpress

My Thoughts on Depression & Mental Illness During my lifetime Ive probably transported 10,000 people who were wrestling with depression, suicidal thoughts and mood swings at the time I came into their life. Ive done CPR on many who lost the battle they were fighting. One of the hardest things for me to deal with is the incredible lack of empathy and compassion toward these people that comes from the medical industry. If I shared the things Ive said in private and the things Ive heard others say about people suffering from depression, youd think we were all monsters, and youd be right. Sometimes we act like senseless beasts. Some of our cold and calloused treatment of people who suffer from mental illness is done out of sheer ignorance. We simply dont understand people who suffer from depression and we make a lot of wrong assumptions and say a lot of unkind things out of ignorance. Modern theories of mental illness based on naturalism and humanism dont help much. Except for a few rare cases, no real causes of mental illness are identified and no treatment is offered except a handful of pills to control the severity of symptoms. Few people treated in the medical system are ever healed of mental illness. I posted a while back about my thanks to God for giving my wife relief in the form of Wellbutrin. I stand by that today, but I think we need to think a lot bigger on this issue. I believe God wants to give us keys to healing this killer of our friends and family once and for all. Ive been asking God to give me some keys and Hes been generous in teaching me and others some new things. Weve been trying what Hes showed us so far, and it seems to working. Not perfectly, and not completely. But were moving in the right direction. I havent seen mental illness magically disappear yet, but I have seen some significant breakthrough. Some people who have gone through the process of emotional healing are getting worn down and losing hope. It seems to them like a never ending process. They just want to be free and healed and have it over, once and for all. In my next post Ill share a little about why healing is a process and how we can speed it up or slow it down.
